I just realized it was life that crumbled around us. Through no fault of my own or anyone else. Life just does that. It crumbles. It breaks. It lingers but then something comes and picks up all the pieces. Put’s it together again around you. That is what I am waiting for.

Oh David Sedaris you have duped me indeed. In one of his essays he said that 5,000 children die a year by being startled to death. LIES! I can’t find any numbers or occurrences online. Well played sir!

Also, apparently I’m not the only one who tried looking this up because of this book. :D

I have been neglectful of reading because of moving to my new apartment. I haven’t completely settled in but I am getting there. :) I am just happy to have a really great, cute, spunky and lively roommate.

The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran= AMAZING! AMAZING! AMAZING! I just love how God is portrayed. More and more I realize no matter what God is love and he knows in the most absolute form what our hearts are crying out for.

I just want to set Gibrans words in music. Something of a Beirut sound would go so perfectly. :>

There are so many quotes in this book that I just loved but I will only list a few of my absolute favorites.

On Love:

“Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love posses not nor would it be possessed; For love is sufficient unto love.”

“When you love you should not say,’God is in my heart,’ but rather, ‘I am in the heart of God.’”

On Children:

“You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls.”

On Eating and Drinking:

On Joy and Sorrow:

This is my absolute favorite quote because it encompasses how this past year has been. It is has almost been a year since the event that changed my life occurred. I regret so much but in the end I know that I bless the dark days. One day I will know the hidden purpose of it all.

The Marriage Bureau for Rich People

All in all, this book was pretty good. It got more interesting in the end but only because I love sappy romance. I don’t think the writing style was my taste. I felt that it was sort of bland and some of the characters were pretty superficial or rather stereotypical. However, I love the culture in this book. <3

I want to learn more about India and about different religions now. :)

Ok….so here are some great little tid bits of the book:

1. the scene in which Mr.Ali and his son are talking about the injustices in the world. Rehman, the son, wants to protest and Mr.Ali, being more traditional, is against it. My edited version of the conversation-

Mr. Ali:”What can ordinary people like us achieve by trying to stand up to them?”

Rehman:”We will protest. We’ll try and get media attention. People have to know that an injustice is being committed by the government and the multinational company.”

Mr. Ali: “I still don’t see what you are your friends are going to accomplish against the government machinery”

Rehman: “If Gandhi had though like that, he would never have started the freedom movement against the British”

2. Several quotes of this book were great:

“perfection is an attribute of God alone, it doesn’t exist in this world”

“Remember, when God makes a creature, human or animal, He also makes its mate at the same time.”

On the Prophet Mohammed-“He said that the faintest ink is more persistent than the strongest memory”

On an encounter with a Christian missionary “I said to the guy, What a coincidence. Wasn’t Hindu mythology divinely inspired, too? And since all our religions are saying the same thing, why go through the hassle of converting from one religion to another? I was born a Muslim and I am happy to remain one.”

“God is one and religions are man-made.”

“Mr.Ali knew from long experience that this romantic love would not last more than a couple of years and they would have to forge a different kind to last them a lifetime…”

The book, so far, is not too interesting. I really do appreciate though that it is making me look up different aspects of Indian culture. For instance, the caste system in India is very intriguing. I’m wikipedia-ing every 5 minutes in this book. :D
